An environmental campus

Waterloo was the first university in Canada to adopt Greening the Campus, the philosophy that university campuses should reflect the world students seek to create. With related research and teaching in each of Waterloo's six faculties, the environment is a topic that cuts across disciplines at Waterloo.

Our students are environmental leaders. They...

• designed an array of solar panels and raised money to install them on campus
• conduct projects to improve campus sustainability
• participate in international environmental projects
• hold a world record for the longest single journey by a solar-powered car
• founded Engineers Without Borders, now an international non-governmental organization

University staff...

• remove weeds with hot steam instead of pesticides
• plant native species which are suited to our climate and don't require extra watering or care
